BASKETBALL TRAINING SHOULD S.U.C.K!

Have you ever watched the movie, Rocky? If so, what about all the rest of the installments of the movie that follows? Or better yet, let's add vagueness to the scenario. Have you ever seen any type of movie where the main character goes up against a "bigger and badder" character and faces defeat to a large extent? Well, to make a long story short, the main character ends the movie defeating this "bigger and badder" character. How? And why does this happen?

To truly understand the concept of these types of movies, you'll have to pay attention primarily to what happens between the defeat and victory. Focus on what happens in the middle of the movie. Well, it's the TRAINING phase that transpires which you will witness that training sucks. But it's the training phase that sets the main character apart from its opposition because of what it does to you mentally and physically. To simply put it, training is teaching or developing a skill with the proper apprenticeship, in order to improve one ability to reach a specific goal.

Many young basketball players miss out on this "middle of the movie" opportunity from the start. There's a large percentage of players and parents that believe that all you need is a team environment to develop your game. But this is untrue. Training is what actually sets you apart from the rest because it provides a few essential components to your game. These components are abbreviated by the work SUCK because real intense basketball training should SUCK:

  • S- Skill Set: You are developing a brand-new arsenal of skill sets to utilize in the game. This is something that you are not typically versed in with only a team environment. Good basketball trainers introduce a different skill set in order to challenge the trainee to grow as an individual.

  • U- Uncomfortable: As Kobe Bryant says it, training should be uncomfortable. It should be a challenge to learn a new skill set. Training is where you should try new things, see what works and what doesn't for your game. But by all means, it should not be comfortable.

  • C- Confidence: What happens when you do something over and over again? You build confidence because mentally you believe that you have perfected it. What happens when you shoot the same jump shot at training, tweak it to an extent with defense but it's ultimately the same jump shot? What happens when you strive to perfect your skill set, spend numerous hours being uncomfortable and game time comes? Confidence builds with every training session, and you aren't afraid to take those shots or drive to the basket for a layup with contact. Let’s quote the GOAT again. Kobe says it best, "Confidence comes from preparation. So, when the game is on the line, I'm not asking myself to do something that I haven't done a thousand times before. So, when I prepare, I know what I'm capable of doing, I know what I'm comfortable doing, I know what I'm not comfortable doing."

  • K-Knowledgeable: And overall, you become knowledgeable in the midst of preparation. Knowledge is POWER on the basketball court.

So, in conclusion, basketball training should SUCK and if it doesn't, I would find one that does.
